Assessment and Data

Collecting and analyzing data appropriately is a skill I have become very comfortable and confident during my past ten years of professional service.  All decisions in my classroom are made based upon data.  Students are responsible for collecting and maintaining their own data folders, which are shared with parents regularly.  Students are also responsible for setting goals and determining pathways to reach those goals.  Examples of my knowledge of assessment and data can be found below.

A professional development I created at the request of the school's administration to support teachers in understanding how to appropriately use their assessment data.

Communication of student progress is important to helping a student better understand their own learning and thinking.  This is also a great way for students to create goals for themselves and to feel successful as they meet those goals.

An assessment data report I created to communicate student progress with parents during Parent Teacher Conferences.

Formative Assessment

I believe strongly that all assessment should be formative assessment and should happen continuously throughout the course of instruction.  All children should master a skill or standard at their own pace. In order for a teacher to determine if they are communicating with the students clearly, a teacher can use a variety of quick assessments while teaching.

Exit Tickets: I rely on the information obtained from a student completing an exit ticket.  This information allows me to gauge how well my students understood to concept, if I need to review anything the next day, or if the material is easy for them and I can push them a little more.

Whole Group Response:  When instructing a whole group it can be easy for some students to rely on others to carry the lesson; however, if a teacher implements the use of whole group response boards (white boards or cards the students use to show their own answers) the students will focus on the lesson more or retain the information because they are active in their learning.
